Freelance wayfinding & signage auditors – UK wide

Fitzpatrick Woolmer is growing – and so is the geographical reach of our projects.

As we continue to secure signage audit and wayfinding projects across the UK, we’re looking to build a nationwide network of experienced Freelance Wayfinding & Signage Auditors who can work with us on a project-by-project basis.

We’re looking for trusted associates located throughout the country who would be happy to represent Fitzpatrick Woolmer on site, carrying out professional signage and wayfinding audits on our behalf and becoming an extension of the FW team.

Why are we building a nationwide network?

Our projects can take us anywhere in the UK.

Rather than routinely sending people hundreds of miles across the country, we want to develop relationships with talented specialists based closer to the projects we’re delivering.

As well as making practical sense, this supports Fitzpatrick Woolmer’s sustainability commitments by helping us reduce unnecessary travel, mileage and the associated carbon footprint of our projects.

The aim is simple: to create a trusted network of FW associates across the country who we can call upon when projects arise in their area.

What might you be doing?

No two sites are quite the same.

One assignment might involve assessing signage across a town or city; another could involve spending a full day exploring routes through a large park or estate.

Depending on the project, you could be:

  • Undertaking comprehensive signage and wayfinding audits
  • Conducting and recording stakeholder interviews
  • Surveying key visitor and pedestrian journeys
  • Identifying important decision points and potential navigation problems
  • Recording existing sign locations, types and condition
  • Photographing and documenting signage systematically
  • Identifying missing, redundant, poorly positioned or ineffective signs
  • Making recommendations for sign types and locations
  • Considering accessibility and inclusive wayfinding
  • Recording observations against plans, schedules and audit documentation
  • Gathering accurate information for our wayfinding, design and project teams
  • Representing Fitzpatrick Woolmer professionally when meeting clients and stakeholders on site

Some audits can involve long days and cover considerable distances, so you will need to be comfortable with the physical demands of site surveying and working outdoors in varying environments and weather conditions.

Who are we looking for?

First and foremost, we’re looking for people who understand wayfinding.

You’ll be observant, methodical and able to look at an environment from the visitor’s perspective – understanding not simply where signs are positioned, but whether people are receiving the right information, in the right place, at the right point in their journey.

Ideally, you’ll have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Wayfinding and signage auditing
  • Signage surveying
  • Wayfinding strategy
  • Environmental graphic design
  • Visitor journey analysis
  • Public realm or placemaking
  • Transport, pedestrian or visitor environments
  • Signage design and implementation

Experience reading plans and accurately recording information, locations, dimensions and photographic references will also be important.

Wayfinding design skills would be a real bonus.

If you’re equally comfortable analysing a site and contributing to the subsequent wayfinding or signage design process, we’d particularly like to hear from you.

Become one of our trusted FW associates

This isn’t about filling a single freelance position.

We’re creating a preferred nationwide network of specialists that we can develop relationships with and call upon as new projects arise.

For the right people, that could mean opportunities to work with Fitzpatrick Woolmer across a varied portfolio of projects and environments while continuing to operate independently.

We want our clients to receive the same professional FW experience wherever their project is located, so reliability, communication and the confidence to represent Fitzpatrick Woolmer professionally on site will be just as important as technical knowledge.

Interested in joining our network?

We’d love to hear from experienced freelancers throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As part of your initial application, please send us:

  • A brief introduction and CV
  • Your location and the areas of the UK you can comfortably cover
  • Details of your relevant wayfinding, signage or surveying experience
  • Examples of relevant projects or a portfolio, where applicable
  • Details of any wayfinding design experience
  • Your typical availability
  • Your standard freelance day rate
  • Whether you’re happy to undertake occasional overnight stays
  • Confirmation that you’re comfortable with extended site visits and significant periods of walking
  • Details of relevant professional/freelance insurance

You don’t need to be based anywhere near our Kent studio – that’s rather the point.

We want to hear from talented specialists across the UK and build a network that allows us to put the right person on the right project, wherever that project happens to be.
