Client: Olley Design
Overview
Keeping things on home soil, Fitzpatrick Woolmer was appointed to manufacture and install a new external wayfinding signage system for Rochester Cathedral. The project formed part of a wider heritage signage strategy designed to improve visitor navigation, accessibility and overall experience.
The scheme focused on replacing an outdated and inconsistent signage system with a clear, durable and cohesive wayfinding solution, tailored to the needs of a historic UK landmark.
The brief
Working closely with Olley Design, Fitzpatrick Woolmer delivered the manufacture and installation of a robust, high-quality wayfinding signage system designed for long-term performance.
The existing external signage, installed in 2015, had become difficult to maintain and lacked consistency across the site. Time-sensitive information, such as opening hours, had been integrated directly into sign designs – leading to frequent updates that reduced legibility and visual quality over time.
In addition, the signage system lacked cohesion in both materials and construction. A mix of timber and metal signage, varying formats and deteriorating structures resulted in a fragmented visitor experience. Directional signage was also limited, making navigation – particularly for accessible routes less intuitive.
The new wayfinding system needed to deliver clear and consistent directional signage, improved accessibility and inclusive navigation, as well as durable materials suitable for long-term external use. A cohesive signage family aligned with the Cathedral’s heritage setting was also required.
Design principles
The scheme prioritised clarity and usability, simplifying information to focus on essential navigation. Outdated or changeable content was removed, ensuring the signage remains relevant and low-maintenance over time.
Directional wayfinding was significantly improved through the introduction of clear arrows, logical sign placement and walking distances – helping visitors to easily locate entrances and key destinations. Accessibility was a central consideration, with clear guidance to wheelchair and buggy access routes supporting inclusive design principles.
Our approach
Not only did the signage need to function effectively for visitors, it also had to reflect the heritage and visual identity of Rochester Cathedral. Working closely with the client, we ensured consistent application of brand colours across the entire wayfinding system. All signage was finished with a DuoGuard™ anti-graffiti coating and supplied with a 10-year guarantee against fading, supporting long-term durability and reduced maintenance.
From a production perspective, material quality and consistency were key. All signage was manufactured to be durable, weather-resistant and highly legible, while remaining sensitive to the architectural character and history of Rochester Cathedral.
The result
The completed wayfinding signage scheme has transformed the visitor experience at Rochester Cathedral, providing a clear, consistent and easy-to-navigate environment.
The new system strengthens first impressions, improves accessibility and reduces ongoing maintenance requirements – delivering a future-proof signage solution for a historic UK site.
By combining thoughtful wayfinding design with expert signage manufacture and installation, Fitzpatrick Woolmer has created a durable and cohesive system that supports both the operational needs and heritage significance of the Cathedral.
