Interpretive signage examples

Interpretive signage displays can have a tremendous impact on visitor experiences. They provide context, information, suggestions, and hints that can cover anything from the history and heritage of a period building to the species of wildlife and plants in a woodland—sharing details with beautiful graphics, illustrations, and concise lettering.

Professionally produced interpretation panels set the tone for a building, visitor attraction, outdoor area or site. They can enthuse, excite and provide insights that all visitors, from infants and upward, will enjoy and remember.

Rather than a dense amount of text, formal notices, or information, interpretive signage guides and explores, using a careful blend of graphics and content, inviting readers to use this knowledge to interpret the space around them.

In this article, we’ve compiled a shortlist of some of our favourite interpretive signage examples to demonstrate how powerful these panels can be and inspire your creativity for your next signage project.

Carlton Marshes: Educational Interpretive Signage for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust

Our first featured project was prompted by the acquisition of a new area of land. This makes Carlton Marshes one of the biggest nature reserves in the region, with an abundance of rare, protected, and fascinating species.

This commission included a range of signage, using hardwoods that slot perfectly into the tranquil open landscape, with metallic features and precision laser etching for sharp, highly visible and textured signage.

Interpretive panels included:

  • Welcome boards featuring graceful swooping birds, a watercolour illustration of the site layout, useful visitor information, and contact details.
  • A wall-mounted exploration display showing the contrasts in different parts of the reserve and inviting visitors to plan their experience, explore the diverse landscapes, and see how these change with the seasons.

Each sign used a consistent colour pallet, reserve graphics and lettering, emphasising high-quality imagery and accessible information to assist groups and visitors of all ages.

Hampstead Heath: Interpretive Signs to Improve Open Air Swimming Safety and Awareness

Our work with the City of London Corporation was based on enhancing awareness of potential risks and ensuring that all users of the open-air swimming facilities on the Heath know which ponds and lakes are suitable for their abilities.

As part of a well-planned strategic wayfinding system, signage locations were selected to ensure visitors could access information at any point while feeling welcomed and encouraged to use these amazing facilities.

We used a variety of formats and illustrations to convey crucial safety messaging, including:

  • Clear icons depicting the types of users for whom each area was safe.
  • High-visibility warning icons to note very deep and cold water.
  • Yellow and red hazard images to clarify specific risks to be conscious of.

These visual assets ensured that anybody, including non-English-speaking international visitors, could understand the information while incorporating attractive illustrations of the ponds and lakes with outlined zones.

Each swimming site now has its own interpretive sign, sharing the name of the bathing pond or pool and reiterating notices, such as staying close to the banks, avoiding water unsuitable for swimming, and advertising times when lifeguards are in attendance.

Trinity Park: Full-Colour Interpretive Signage Based on Impactful Visuals

Maidstone Borough Council worked with Fitzpatrick Woolmer to create immersive interpretive signs for Trinity Park. This peaceful park provides a burst of wildlife, bluebells and trees in the middle of an urban landscape.

The focus was on a sensitive design that would sympathise with the serene backdrop while encouraging visitors to look around them and see the countless species of butterflies, flowers, bees, and birds that call the park home.

Each new interpretive display includes:

  • Visuals to showcase the wildlife in the area – from birds to tiny creepy crawlies.
  • Information about the history and ecosystem of the space, which is common to historic churchyards and found within this green oasis built on an ancient burial ground.
  • Details of the conservation efforts made by the local council and why protecting and preserving the park is essential to local history.

Produced from tough, waterproof stainless steel and featuring full-colour n-viro™ print for maximum impact, these durable interpretive displays blend seamlessly with the cool, shady woodland, using high-contrast lettering.

Chorleywood Common: Natural Oak Interpretive Signage With Watercolour Illustrations

Chorleywood Parish Council awarded Fitzpatrick Woolmer the contract to develop interpretation panels for the woodlands and heathlands around Chorleywood Common, and we created a plan inspired by the woods and trees, using solid signage panels with oak edging, which sit nicely within the setting.

Our creative team designed stunning illustrations to showcase the Common’s wonderful wildlife and natural history. A watercolour map helps visitors navigate the space and look for local species, flora, and fauna.

These interpretation displays were made using the following:

  • Natural bark edging to respect the landscape and retain a sense of nature.
  • Full-colour n-viro™ printing for colour clarity and the ability to show off the detail within each illustration.
  • Map artwork as an engaging and attractive way to help visitors find hidden areas within the Common.

As with all signage projects, we considered the need for practical signage illustrating prohibited activities and positioned these discreetly on one face of each custom-made panel. This reinforced the need to respect the Common without overshadowing the welcome extended to visitors.

The Phillips Memorial Park: Elegant, Vandal-Resistant Signage for a Heritage Urban Park

Finally, we’d like to highlight the interpretive panels created for Waverley Borough Council, which required signage for a traditional town park with a great deal of history – but that needed to be secure, durable and vandalism-resistant.

They selected our CavalierTM range, inspired by vintage and period signage used in Victorian parks. The range features tactile displays to support visually impaired visitors and illustrations to showcase the park’s layout, heritage, and key amenities and attractions.

As a result, the memorial park is more accessible and inclusive and provides each visitor with insightful information about the land, its history, and the wildlife they’ll be able to see during a stroll, cycle, or family picnic.
