Hadleigh Country Park was commissioned by Essex County Council as part of the Olympic Legacy Project following the London 2012 Mountain Bike events, with the ambition of transforming the site into a fully integrated visitor destination that combined recreation, heritage, ecology and education.
We were thrilled to be appointed to develop a complete site-wide wayfinding and interpretation strategy that would not only improve navigation across the park, but also celebrate the site’s remarkable landscape, history and environmental significance through engaging and immersive storytelling.

The brief
The project called for a cohesive visitor experience that could connect the many different aspects of the park into one clear and memorable journey. Alongside practical wayfinding and orientation, the interpretation needed to reveal the stories behind the landscape – from its industrial and wartime heritage to its ecological importance – while remaining accessible and engaging for a wide range of visitors.
Fitzpatrick Woolmer’s role extended far beyond traditional signage design. Extensive site audits and visitor journey surveys were carried out to understand how people moved through the park and interacted with the environment. This research informed the development of a consistent visual identity that could be applied across every element of wayfinding, interpretation and visitor information throughout the site.
Design principles
At the heart of the project was a desire to create interpretation that felt immersive, tactile and deeply connected to the landscape itself. Rather than relying solely on conventional signage, the scheme combined craftsmanship, storytelling and artistic detail to encourage moments of curiosity and discovery throughout the park.
The creative approach placed a strong emphasis on visual storytelling. Fitzpatrick Woolmer produced detailed computer-generated maps, watercolour illustrations and CGI reconstructions that brought the site’s heritage vividly to life. Visitors were able to explore stories spanning the park’s industrial past, wartime history and ecological significance through engaging and highly visual interpretation designed to appeal to audiences of all ages.
Natural materials and bespoke detailing played a key role throughout the scheme. Timber wayfinding posts incorporated burnt and branded line illustrations directly into the wood, creating distinctive sculptural features inspired by the surrounding landscape and wildlife. Etched zinc rubbing plaques were also integrated into the waymarker posts, featuring enlarged natural details such as the intricate structure of a dragonfly’s wing. These tactile elements encouraged visitors, particularly younger audiences, to interact with the landscape through wildlife rubbing activities and nature trail exploration.
Our approach
Fitzpatrick Woolmer designed, produced and delivered a large family of signs and interpretive displays across the park, including orientation panels, trailhead information, directional signage, lecterns and bespoke waymarkers.
The project was developed through a highly collaborative creative process, with the client closely involved at every stage. Initial pencil compositions, wireframe CGI concepts and evolving artwork were reviewed throughout the design development process to ensure the final interpretation was both visually compelling and historically accurate.
By combining illustration, mapping, interpretation and experiential design, Fitzpatrick Woolmer created a visitor experience that balanced functionality with creativity, helping visitors engage more meaningfully with the park and its stories.
The result
The completed scheme transformed the visitor experience at Hadleigh Country Park, creating a cohesive and engaging interpretation and wayfinding system that encourages exploration, interaction and discovery across the site.
Through a combination of carefully crafted materials, immersive storytelling and thoughtful visitor design, the project successfully balanced accessibility, creativity and environmental sensitivity while bringing the park’s unique heritage and landscape vividly to life. The result is a distinctive and memorable visitor experience that continues to support Hadleigh Country Park as a thriving recreational and educational destination.
