Reconnecting visitors with the heart of Ramsgate

Ramsgate Town Council commissioned Fitzpatrick Woolmer to develop a comprehensive wayfinding and signage strategy designed to reconnect visitors with the town centre, seafront and harbour while celebrating Ramsgate’s distinctive coastal identity and heritage.

The project responded to years of inconsistent and outdated signage that had built up organically across the town, often creating confusion for visitors and weakening the overall experience. A key ambition of the scheme was to encourage people arriving at Ramsgate railway station to explore further, following a carefully curated route through the high street towards the seafront and supporting greater footfall for local businesses along the way.

The brief

The aim of the project was to create a clear, welcoming and visually cohesive wayfinding system that could simplify navigation while strengthening Ramsgate’s sense of place. The signage needed to help visitors move confidently through the town while encouraging exploration beyond the immediate waterfront and reconnecting key public spaces through a more considered visitor journey.

We began the project with extensive site surveys and a detailed audit of existing signage across Ramsgate, identifying visitor touchpoints, pedestrian decision points and areas where navigation could be improved. Working closely with Ramsgate Town Council and local heritage stakeholders, the team developed a phased strategy that balanced practical functionality with a distinctive visual identity inspired by the town’s maritime heritage and historic architecture.

Design principles

Our expert team developed a town-wide wayfinding strategy that combined detailed visitor analysis with thoughtful design and placemaking principles. By carefully studying pedestrian movement and key arrival points throughout the town, the scheme was able to simplify navigation while also encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring Ramsgate’s streets, businesses and waterfront.

The project brought together mapping, interpretation and visual identity into one cohesive system, ensuring every signage element worked together as part of a connected visitor experience. Through close collaboration with local stakeholders, the scheme was shaped to reflect both the practical needs of the town and the character that makes Ramsgate distinctive.

The result

The completed scheme delivered a clear and cohesive wayfinding system that transformed how visitors experience and navigate Ramsgate. By creating stronger visual connections between the railway station, town centre and seafront, the project helped improve pedestrian flow while encouraging greater exploration of the wider town.

Most importantly, the scheme established a recognisable and characterful identity for Ramsgate’s public spaces, combining practical navigation with thoughtful design to create a more welcoming and engaging visitor experience for residents and visitors alike.
