Hidden below Verulamium Park in St Albans is something quite remarkable.  Buried beneath the lush parkland is the historic Roman city of the same name. Verulamium Park has a lot to offer visitors, from rich history to beautiful open green space, and we were thrilled to be enhancing the visitor experience at this fascinating historical site.

The Countryside Management Service together with St Albans City and District Council were looking for signs that would not only help people orientate the site, but would also raise the profile of the park and give it a new, improved identity. We assisted by replacing the tired-looking signage with new entrance signs and fingerposts.

To reflect the history of the site and to create a sense of place, we designed a contemporary logo replicating a traditional Roman helmet. This identity was carried across Verulamium Park’s new signage to create continuity throughout the grounds. To guide visitors to places of interest, we produced high quality, metal fingerposts which were placed at key junctions around the site. We have made all of the entrances to Verulamium Park more welcoming and attractive by introducing bespoke welcome signs, complete with Romanesque details. By introducing the new identity into the fingerposts and signage, they integrate perfectly into their historical surroundings.

Our approach

The welcome signs clearly display our watercolour 3D map, printed on durable GRP graphic panels. They present excellent clarity and quality of colour, enabling visitors to access the information easily.

Our long lasting signage will help maintain Verulamium Park’s Green Flag status by looking pristine for many years and giving visitors a good impression of the park. The new signage and interpretation will open up the park to visitors, encouraging them to discover features and areas which may have been unknown to them.
