Interpretation Panel Signage Design
Producing wonderful interpretation panel signage
Interpretation panels can be an important component of our projects, transforming information into meaningful moments that shape how people understand, navigate and emotionally connect with a place. Far more than information boards, interpretation panels are carefully crafted storytelling touchpoints that enrich the visitor journey, turning landscapes, landmarks and heritage assets into memorable experiences.
Every interpretation panel is created by our talented, time-served designers in the Creative Studio. Drawing on decades of experience across Britain’s most culturally significant heritage and outdoor environments, our team understands how to balance storytelling, design hierarchy, materiality and environmental sensitivity.
This depth of experience ensures every panel is rooted in place, aligned to its surroundings and designed to contribute to the wider placemaking vision.
As part of our Experience Signage approach, we see interpretation panel design being about much more than presenting facts. It is about shaping the quality of the visit itself. Clear visual hierarchy, intuitive layouts, engaging imagery, mapping and carefully structured narratives all work together to guide the eye, encourage dwell time and make information accessible to diverse audiences. Done well, interpretation panels deepen understanding, inspire curiosity and help visitors form a lasting connection with the environment around them.
Our interpretation signage expertise
Design is critical because it protects the integrity of the story being told. Poor layouts, weak material choices or disconnected visuals can diminish both engagement and brand perception. Our Creative Studio resolves these challenges through thoughtful, strategic design that reduces risk and ensures every panel performs both functionally and emotionally.
By combining heritage expertise with the principles of Experience Signage, we create interpretation panels that protect place, enrich experience and support long-term sustainability goals. The result is signage that does not simply inform, but actively contributes to how visitors remember, value and return to the places you have worked so hard to shape.

Asked Questions
Why choose Fitzpatrick Woolmer?
Clients choose Fitzpatrick Woolmer because we offer a genuinely end-to-end service for outdoor signage, wayfinding and interpretation projects. We combine consultancy, design, manufacture and installation, helping clients manage complex projects through one experienced team.
We have been established since 1995 and work across the UK on projects for public sector organisations, private businesses and other site operators. Our in-house capabilities cover signage design, interpretation, illustration, mapping, manufacture and installation, so we can support both straightforward orders and more specialist schemes.
Can you help with interpretation copywriting, illustration and mapping?
Yes. In addition to panel layout and artwork, we can help develop the content itself. Our in-house services include copywriting, illustration, creative mapping and wider interpretation support, which is especially useful if you need help turning research or ideas into visitor-friendly content.
For more detail on these services, please see the relevant pages on our website: creative mapping, illustration and interpretation signage design.
Which interpretation board should I choose?
The right interpretation board depends on where it will be installed, the amount of information you need to present, the audience you want to engage and the visual character of the site. Timber structures often suit parks, conservation areas and heritage settings, while more contemporary metal options can be a better fit for civic, education or urban environments.
If you are unsure, we can help you choose a format, material and display style that best suits your project.
Can graphic panels be replaced or updated later?
Yes. Many framed signs are designed so that the graphic panel can be removed and replaced, allowing information to be updated without replacing the entire sign structure. This can be a very practical option where messages, maps or interpretation content may change over time.
