Client: Surrey County Council
Overview
We’re thrilled to share that Fitzpatrick Woolmer was appointed to deliver a comprehensive wayfinding and interpretation scheme supporting a new walking and cycling route between Weybridge and the historic Brooklands area in Surrey. The project aimed to improving navigation while celebrating the unique heritage of the Brooklands Heritage Area and Community Park – home to the world’s first racing circuit and once Britain’s largest aircraft manufacturing site.
Working closely with Surrey County Council, we helped bring clarity, cohesion and plenty of character to a route designed for both commuters and leisure users.
The Brief
Surrey County Council approached us to support the final stages of a well-developed project establishing a new cycling and walking route between Weybridge and the Brooklands Heritage Area and Community Park.
With planning already advanced, the Council had completed a detailed site survey and identified the locations and types of signage required, selecting preferred options from our standard product ranges. The key objective was to deliver a cohesive wayfinding scheme that would unify the Weybridge and Brooklands sections of the route, while also reflecting the distinct identity and heritage of the Brooklands area.

Our Approach
With the groundwork already in place, our role was to refine, produce and implement the scheme to the highest standard.
We provided:
• Expert typesetting and proofing across all signage
• High-quality print production of interpretation panels from client-supplied artwork
• Full manufacture and installation
• Careful removal of existing signage to ensure a seamless transition
A key focus was maintaining visual consistency across the route. We incorporated the distinctive Brooklands gold and green palette throughout, while sensitively blending design elements from the Weybridge section. Subtle references – such as the iconic racetrack form – helped root the signage in its historic setting without compromising clarity.
The completed scheme included a range of durable, high-quality signage solutions, comprising traditional fingerposts, directional ladder signs, interpretive lecterns, and welcome signs.
Each element was manufactured with longevity in mind, ensuring the scheme will continue to serve the community for years to come.
The Result
The Brooklands wayfinding scheme now provides a clear, engaging and visually cohesive journey between Weybridge and Brooklands. It not only improves navigation for cyclists and pedestrians but also strengthens the sense of place – connecting walkers with the rich history of the area as they travel through it.
By combining careful attention to detail with a collaborative approach, we delivered a scheme that feels both practical and meaningful – supporting movement while telling the story of Brooklands.
